March 2026 is officially Women’s History Month in Washington!

To mark the beginning of this month, Governor Bob Ferguson signed a proclamation honoring the generations of women who have shaped our state and who continue to build a brighter future for our communities every day.

WHEREAS, women of every race, class and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of the state of Washington in countless recorded and unecorded ways; and

WHEREAS, since time immemorial to present-day Washington, Indigenous women have stewarded the lands and waters, sustaining communities even in the face of displacement and systemic violence; and

WHEREAS, immigrant and refugee women have enriched Washington’s economy, culture and civic life, helping build strong communities and brighter futures for their families and our state; and

WHEREAS, Black, Latina, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Native American, and other women of color continue to face barriers to health, safety, housing, and economic security due to systemic inequities, while often remaining at the forefront of efforts to build a more just and inclusive Washington for all; and

WHEREAS, transgender women in the state of Washington have always broken down barriers, and continue to do so, for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and beyond; and

WHEREAS, women have honorably served our nation and state with courage and distinction in every branch of the military and public service; and

WHEREAS, women have critical economic roles across communities and industries statewide, where they constitute a significant portion of the labor force, while disproportionately shouldering the unpaid labor of caring for children, elders and people with disabilities, and Washington continues to have one of the largest gender wage gaps in the nation; and

WHEREAS, women and girls deserve to live in a Washington where gender equity is not a goal, but a reality, and their safety.is not undermined by gender-based violence; and

WHEREAS, Women’s History Month provides an opportunity to honor women’s achievements, recognize their ongoing contributions and recommit to a more equitable future for all; and

WHEREAS, the theme for the 2026 Women’s History Month is “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” emphasizing the role of women in designing solutions for a better tomorrow;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Ferguson, governor of the state of Washington, do hereby proclaim March 2026 as
