Overview
Improving Access to Washington’s Abortion Medication Stockpile Bill
In 2023, Washington State purchased stockpiles of mifepristone and misoprostol to safeguard access to medication abortion. Without changes to current state law, Washington risks holding a stockpile of medication abortion that cannot be distributed, undermining a proactive investment to ensure access to essential care amid growing national legal uncertainty.
The Solution: HB 2182 / SB 5917
This bill clarifies authority and removes barriers so the state can distribute abortion medications when needed, before medications expire or access is disrupted.

Widespread Use
Medication abortion accounts for approximately 68% of abortions in Washington and is a safe, widely used option for care. Mifepristone also has other medical uses, including for miscarriage management and high blood sugar treatment.
SourceAccessibility
Availability through telehealth and mail delivery is critical for those facing geographic, logistical, or timing barriers, and for managing care at home.
Growing Threats
There are at least three pending federal lawsuits that threaten access to mifepristone nationwide. These lawsuits could create medically unnecessary barriers to access mifepristone and impact access to this medication even in states like Washington.
